General Role Description:

The Volunteer Coordinator provides direction, coordination, and consultation for all volunteer functions within the Section to

  • Strengthen public or private programs,
  • Involve a community of supporters as described in the duties outlined below.

Role Responsibilities

Volunteer opportunities

  • Survey chapter and committee leadership to assess needs for volunteer assistance
  • Develop and Maintain Volunteer Service Descriptions for volunteers
  • Develop, Organize and participate in volunteer recognition programs and special events
  • Evaluate all aspects of volunteer programs to ensure effectiveness and to recommend/implement changes as appropriate
  • Maintain accurate records and provide timely statistical and activity reports on volunteer participation

Recruit, interview and place applicants for volunteer work

  • Maintain Volunteer efforts in live events and virtual/on-line activities, including web forms and social media
  • Work with Marketing and Public Relations and professional associations to publicize opportunities for volunteers
  • Build relationships with related technology and social groups of interest to membership (currently more than 8,000 local members)

Provide ongoing support and guidance for volunteers

  • Develop and provide materials for volunteer orientation and training
  • Develop and manage volunteer policies, procedures, and standards of volunteer service
  • Provide new volunteers with information to help them be successful
  • Act as a single point of contact for communications related to Volunteerism at the Section
  • Periodically survey volunteers for feedback

Create and distribute various communications and publications

  • Maintain relationships with chapter chairs (currently more than 25)
  • Attend bi-monthly meetings for the Executive Committee of the Section (about 6 per year)
  • Maintain relationships with all the committee members (currently more than 12)
  • Maintain schedule of opportunities for volunteers in each chapter and committee

Experience Preferred

  • Have role-related experience, such as managing volunteer programs, leading teams and/or organizations
  • Knowledge of management principles and evaluation techniques that involve a cadre of volunteers

Skills

  • Do you have experience in:
    • basic computer applications, such as word processing, spreadsheets
    • web-based applications, such as Google Docs, Survey Monkey, Constant Contact and Mailchimp
    • web-based posting to a website CRM, such as WordPress
    • mobile-based social media, such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, or willing to learn
    • Organization and planning skills

Capabilities

  • Effectively communicate orally and in writing
  • Ability to work well with a diverse group of staff and volunteers
  • Willingness to adjust hours to accommodate the needs of the role
  • Ability to effectively manage a wide array of tasks, projects, and responsibilities

Time Commitments

  • Low weekly time impact, optionally attend committee and chapter meetings
  • Attend special events and training (Annual meeting, Engineer Week, etc.)
  • Attend meetings of the Executive Committee (about 6 per year)
