MIT.nano for You: Capabilities Overview

MIT.nano is a shared, multidisciplinary research facility that provides MIT researchers and external partners with access to advanced nanofabrication, characterization, and prototyping capabilities. Through Fab.nano and Characterization.nano, users can access state-of-the-art facilities that support the full research and development process: from device fabrication and materials processing to nanoscale imaging, analysis, and performance evaluation.

This overview showcases MIT.nano’s breadth of capabilities, advanced instrumentation, and technical expertise. Whether you are developing a new device, investigating unfamiliar material, refining a fabrication process, or addressing a complex characterization challenge, MIT.nano offers the facilities, expertise, and collaborative environment to help transform research questions into results.

Speakers:

Anna Osherov: Anna Osherov, PhD, is Associate Director of Characterization.nano at MIT.nano, where she leads a broad portfolio of advanced characterization facilities and capabilities. Since joining MIT.nano in 2018, she has played a key role in building and expanding Characterization.nano as a multidisciplinary research resource supporting researchers across MIT and beyond. With more than 20 years of experience in applied research, Anna’s expertise encompasses materials characterization, nanoscale metrology, microscopy, spectroscopy, surface analysis, and research infrastructure development. She works closely with researchers to enable complex experiments, introduce new measurement capabilities, and translate emerging technologies into practical research tools. Anna is passionate about creating accessible, sustainable, and collaborative research environments that maximize the impact and effective use of advanced research infrastructure. Her work spans strategic planning for new equipment and facilities, development of user and training programs, partnerships with instrument manufacturers and external organizations, and implementation of digital tools and operational strategies that enhance laboratory efficiency and the overall research experience.

Jorg Scholvin: Jorg Scholvin joined MIT.nano as the Assistant Director of User Services at Fab.nano in 2018.  Jorg holds a BS, MEng and PhD in Electrical Engineering from MIT, and has over 15 years of experience working in the cleanroom on projects from power transistors and MEMS devices to neural implants and x-ray spectrometers. Jorg has been co-lecturing MIT’s undergraduate micro/nano-fabrication laboratory class. Prior to joining MIT.nano, Jorg worked at MIT on research combining microfabrication and neuroengineering to create high-density neural implants and co-founded an SBIR-funded company to commercialize the devices.
