The electric power industry is facing unprecedented pressure on the transmission system, driven by rapid load growth from data centers and electrification, increasing renewable integration, and more frequent extreme events. While the need for transmission investment is becoming increasingly evident, determining when, where, and how to invest remains a complex technical challenge. In an era of growing uncertainty and rapidly evolving system conditions, planning practices must continue to evolve, not only in the analytical methods used to evaluate transmission solutions, but also in the efficiency and scalability of the planning process itself.
This presentation explores several emerging topics in economic and reliability transmission planning, including planning for data center load growth, incorporating extreme weather into long-term studies, and quantifying the multiple value streams of transmission investments. Drawing on recent planning studies across North American power systems, the presentation will demonstrate how these evolving challenges are influencing study assumptions, modeling methodologies, and decision-making frameworks.
Bio: Hanyue Li, P.E., Ph.D., is a Senior Manager in the Energy Market Analysis group at Electric Power Engineers (EPE), where she leads utility-focused work in economic transmission planning, resource planning, and integrated system planning. Her experience spans utility planning across multiple North American regions, with expertise in reliability transmission planning, including steady-state, short-circuit, and transient stability analysis, as well as production cost modeling and transmission benefit evaluation. Hanyue holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Texas A&M University, an M.S. from Carnegie Mellon University, and a B.S. from the Illinois Institute of Technology. She is a licensed Professional Engineer and is passionate about advancing integrated system planning by bringing together traditionally siloed reliability, economic, generation, and transmission planning through automation and advanced analytics.
