WIE - Bojic Iva

Dr. Iva Bojic will talk about both formal and informal STEM education from the perspective of the IEEE Croatia Section. She will discuss the differences in learning outcomes of informal and formal education. For example, according the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, after-/out-of-school settings (i.e. informal education) tends to give more emphasis to outcomes related to development of interest and identity in STEM fields, while school-based STEM education tends to give more emphasis to learning outcomes for which measures are narrowly focused on improved conceptual knowledge or achievement.  She will also address why, although both forms of educations are important, IEEE should focus more on informal education. She will describe the IEEE Croatia Section’s popularization program called “SUZA,” which has the goals of motivating pre-university student’s interests in STEM fields, supporting their endeavors to major in STEM fields at university, and educating pre-university STEM teachers.

Iva Bojic, PhD is a post-doctoral Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA.  Previously, she was a post-doctoral Research Associate at the Department of Telecommunications of the University of Zagreb Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing in Croatia. For her doctoral thesis “Self-organizing Synchronization in Machine-to-Machine Communication Systems Based on a Pulse-Coupled Oscillators Model,” she received the Silver Plaque “Josip Loncar”, the Dean’s award for outstanding doctoral dissertation and particularly successful scientific research. Iva Bojic is a part of the Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program.

Dr. Bojic is a member of IEEE where currently she serves as a Chair of Educational Activities for the IEEE Croatian Section. Moreover, she is a Chair of the Organizational Committee for the science popularization program called “SUZA – from school to science and the academic community” – the University of Zagreb Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing official science popularization program.  From 2011-2014 Dr. Bojic gave 12 invited talks both in Croatia and at MIT, Politecnico di Milano, Google.  She has talked about her scientific career, her popularization activities, writing scientific articles.  The full list of her invited talks together with the short description and presentations is available at http://agents.usluge.tel.fer.hr/iva.bojic/talks.
