Optical Communication Systems: Scaling Capacity and Energy

June 9, 2022 @ 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm America/New York Timezone

Photonics Society

Speaker:   Dr. Peter Winzer, Nubis Communications

We will discuss the capacity scaling of optical communications from ultra-long-haul subsea cables to ultra-low-power intra-datacenter interconnects and show that massive spatial parallelism is the only energy sustainable option for the next decade and beyond.

Peter Winzer received his Ph.D. from TU Vienna, Austria, in 1998, where he investigated space-borne Doppler lidar and laser communications. From 2000 to 2019 he worked at Bell Labs, USA, where he performed research on fiber-optic communication systems and networks, set multiple high-speed optical transmission records, and contributed to optical communications product developments. In 2020 he founded the start-up Nubis Communications. He has widely published and patented and is actively involved with IEEE and OSA. He served as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Lightwave Technology (2013 to 2018), was Program Chair of ECOC 2009, and Program/General Chair of OFC 2015/2017. Dr. Winzer is a Highly Cited Researcher, a Fellow of Bell Labs, IEEE, and OSA, and a member of the US National Academy of Engineering. He received multiple awards including the 2018 Tyndall Award and holds an honorary doctorate from the Technical University of Eindhoven.
