IBM Debating Technology

Deep Blue showed the world that a computer can beat a human world champion in chess. Watson used big data analytics to defeat top human contestants in question answering. Now, IBM Debating Technologies is taking intelligent computing to completely unexplored domains. The goal is to develop technologies that can assist humans to debate and reason. When it comes to decisions, opinions or points of view, there are no “right” or “wrong” answers. Successful arguments are based on evidence, constructed with perspective, and delivered persuasively. These abilities have always been considered exclusive to humans – until now. This cognitive computing effort explores scenarios with more than one “correct” answer (for example as a Jeopardy! clue) and leads to generation of pro and con claims for controversial topics and can be extended to other domains as well. The distinctive debating technologies developed at IBM labs across the globe can have great practical use in industries as varied as government, legal, finance, healthcare, and sales, to name a few. In this talk, I will explore some of the latest work happening in this field and also touch upon some of the other exciting exploratory research happening at IBM Research Lab, India.

Mithun Das Gupta, is currently working as a Researcher in the Cognitive Computing team at IBM Research Labs, Bangalore India. His expertise are in the fields of computer vision and pattern recognition. He has worked extensively in the field of medical image analysis, primarily in ultrasound and multi-spectral image understanding. He holds a PhD in ECE from University of Illinois, Urbana Champaign.
