This presentation explores the critical role of Protection and Control (P&C) systems in offshore wind projects, detailing their scope and responsibilities. It covers the project’s scale, capacity, and regulatory aspects, and explains the system architecture, including substations and cables. The protection philosophy and schemes ensure safety, equipment protection, and grid reliability. Communication and SCADA systems, testing and commissioning strategies, and cybersecurity considerations are also discussed, along with lessons learned from past projects to enhance future implementations. By integrating these elements, the presentation aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the complexities involved in offshore wind projects.
Harold O. Fritz an electrical engineer from the University of La Salle, Colombia, has been working in P&C since the early 1990s. Over the past decade, he has specialized in high and medium voltage substations and offshore wind projects, designing systems for projects up to 2200 MW. He developed US market employer requirements based on various standards and selected technical bidders for major equipment. His expertise includes testing and commissioning protection relays, transmission line protection, implementing advanced monitoring technologies, and ECC managing distribution and transmission systems for 3.2 million customers. Harold has also worked on significant projects like a 400 MW hydroelectric plant and system protection for stations in Rochester, NY.
