Implementation of the IEC 61850 Architecture – Lessons Learned at National Grid is a presentation detailing the National Grid US journey with IEC 61850 to date. We begin by walking through the overview of the IEC 61850 program, key milestones, and goals for the program moving forward. We then share technical lessons learned and takeaways after implementing the first pilot substation in New York state in March of 2020.
Erica Russell Salk has nearly 10 years’ experience in the Utility Industry. She started her career at Parsons Corporation in Utility Engineering Consulting. She has held various positions at National Grid. She spent several years as a Protection Engineer and spent time as the Technical Advisor to the US Chief Electric Engineer. Erica is currently the Engineering Manager of IEC 61850 Substation Automation group for National Grid based in Lincoln, Rhode Island. Erica has a BSEE from Trinity College, MSEE from Brown University, and a Graduate Certificate in Power Systems Engineering Protection and Control from WPI. She is a registered PE in Rhode Island and a member of IEEE.
