IEC 61850 is a standard for communication within the electrical power system. The standard is a catalyst to transition power system protection & control into a modern IT based systems. This lecture will explore the details of IEC 61850 and discuss how National Grid is embracing the standard to facilitate a reduction in capital and operational costs, modernize engineering, and prepare for future power problems such as large scale penetration of renewables.

Biography: Mark Thompson, PE, PMP is the engineering manager for the IEC 61850 group at National Grid. His group is responsible for the development and rollout of IEC 61850 throughout the National Grid US territory. He has over 10 years of experience with industrial and utility power and control systems.
