Grants and Non-Dilutive Investments

As an entrepreneur you need to be concerned about how to fund your start-up. At the same time, control is a vital issue since your ability to shape a venture to a future opportunity will assure that your dream can come true. Funding and control are intertwined. Grants provide funding with a minimal direct ownership impact but often involve intellectual property encumbrances. Government sponsored Small Business Research contracts (SBIRs and STTRs) are openly competed and involve a minimum of ownership dilution. Which grants and Government contracts you are eligible for also depends on the type of company your have have formed. Many grants are available only to nonprofits so the formation of dual companies – one a for-profit and the other a nonprofit with joint ownership is an option for high technology companies that needs to be explored. Our November 4th Waltham meeting will explore these issues and others. You will also have the opportunity to network with other attendees considering these very issues and to directly ask questions of our speakers.
