Historically, utility companies have utilized preventative maintenance tactics to maintain electric grid reliability, which involves following a predetermined fixed schedule to regularly inspect and service assets. Predictive maintenance, on the other hand, is not dictated by a predetermined schedule; rather, targeted areas for maintenance are dictated based on predictive analytics.

To operate the electric system reliably, it is crucial to identify the cause of potential faults or failures before they have an opportunity to occur. When it comes to asset management, there is an evolution happening within the energy industry where utilities are moving from preventative maintenance to predictive maintenance. In this session, you will learn how you can develop Predictive maintenance applications using machine learning to anticipate when an asset will need maintenance or servicing. Information derived from the equipment sensors can be turned into meaningful and actionable insights for proactive maintenance of assets. Companies can deploy their maintenance services more effectively and improve equipment up-time by proactively identifying potential issues.

Mr. Baru is a senior product marketing manager at MathWorks. His primary focus is on the use of data science and deep learning for engineering applications such as predictive maintenance and reinforcement learning. He has an M. Eng in electrical and computer engineering from Cornell University.

Mr. Shekhar currently manages Utilities & Energy business at MathWorks Inc. He works closely with engineers and senior managers at leading Utility and Energy companies worldwide on improving their workflows in a variety of applications areas-including T&D Asset Management, Grid Analytics, System Reliability, Planning, Operations and Compliance.

Before joining MathWorks, Shishir was a Senior Engineer at National Grid USA where he was involved in various projects such as Integration of Distributed Energy technologies on Electric T&D systems, Substation Engineering and Design, Planning of High Voltage Overhead and Underground Transmission Networks.

Shishir is a Senior Member of IEEE and holds a Master’s degree in Management Studies from Harvard University, USA and Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from Northeastern University, USA.
