Course:

Building Cutting Edge Applications with Windows Workflow Foundation and the .NET v3 Framework

Lecturer:

Scott Currier, Senior Consultant, EMC Microsoft Practice

Date:

Mondays, 6:30 PM - 9:30 PM, April 2, 9,16, 23

Location:

Holiday Inn Select, 15 Middlessex Canal Park Road, Woburn, MA

Overview:

Windows Workflow Foundation (WF) is part of the Microsoft.NET v3 framework and provides modeling and runtime capability for building the next generation of workflow driven applications. Applications that leverage the WF framework can execute complex process driven logic in the middle and presentation tiers for a variety of application types. This is made possible by use of the WF embedded runtime server.  Complex designs can be constructed directly in code or visually using the Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Extensions for Windows Workflow Foundation.

Target Audience:

This course is targeted at application developers who wish to leverage the power of WF and .NET v3 to build cutting edge workflow driven applications. However, anyone with interest in Microsoft’s new technologies and has a basic understanding object-oriented programming, event processing, and web services will greatly benefit as well.

Benefits/Goals of Attending:

Learn how to construct workflow applications capable of leveraging new features of the .NET v3 framework. You will learn how WF communicates with the outside world with a brief introduction to Microsoft’s Communication and Presentation Foundations.

Outline:

Session 1: Prerequisites and Introduction to Selected Microsoft Technologies

  • General introduction to the .NET v3 Framework

  • Review of the C# language

  • Working with Visual Studio 2005

  • Deep dive into the .NET Framework with examples.

Session 2: Introduction to Windows Workflow Foundation

  • Common Pitfalls creating workflows without WF

  • Windows Workflow Foundation API

  • Using Visual Studio for Building Workflows

  • WF Activities: Sequential and State Based Workflows

  • Debugging Workflows

Session 3: Introduction to XAML

  • How XAML fits with the .NET Framework

  • Extensible Object Markup Language (XOML)

  • Using XOML in constructing workflows

  • Application Example Part 1: TBD

Session 4: Putting workflow to work

  • Leveraging Windows Communication Foundation within Workflows

  • Leveraging Workflows within Windows Presentation Foundation.

  • Application Example Part 2: TBD

Handouts:

Copies of the course outline slides will be provided along with relevant handouts when appropriate.
